MVPs are SADA Premier A champions after a dramatic grand final win over Cobras Gold that went all the way to the teams game decider. Andrew Pugh (MVPs) threw an incredible 11 pegs, including the final dart of the night that delivered the win in the second leg of the teams game. The MVPs only qualified for finals in the final round of the regular season when Outsiders defeated Paradise Pigs to block the Pigs from taking the MVPs spot in 4th. But the MVPs played three superb cut-throat finals and thoroughly deserve their name on the SADA Premier A trophy. Cobras Gold were gallant in defeat, throwing some superb darts throughout the night. Alex Bennett, Adrian Spain and Matt Crowell (Cobras Gold) all won three out of four singles matches with Crowell winning a clutch final singles match that sent the final into the 'extra-time' team's game.
The Paradise Knights are Premier B champions for Winter Season 2024 after a strong grand final win over The Usual Suspects. The Suspects snagged an early win in the first doubles but things went mostly south from there as Paradise Knights proved why they have been the best side all season. Terry Smith took over the Knights captaincy this season with his core group of five players - himself, Sotiri Vasiliou, Con Mavris, Paul Hughes and Mark Deacon, who all played in the final. The Usual Suspects had a superb first season playing in SADA but were missing their highest average player in the final and fell just short.
There will be a new name on the SADA Premier A trophy next week after MVPs defeated Toon Squad in the Preliminary Final. MVPs won both doubles but all four Squad members won their first singles match and suddenly they were up 4-2. Jesse Marshall (MVPs) took advantage of his opponent’s confusion about what was remaining then rubbed the salt in by throwing a 13-dart leg to win the match. It turned out to be the start of a 6-match winning streak, just as MVPs had done to the Suvners last week. With the game in the balance at 8-7, up stepped MVPs’ father-son combo Andrew and Lleyton Pugh. The Pugh pair finished their games with wins at almost the same time, meaning the MVPs had made the Grand Final and Toon Squad’s outstanding season as minor premier was over. The Grand Final match-up between Cobras Gold and MVPs is a spicy one, as Adam Leek and Marshall are former Cobras who started their own team - MVPs - just six months ago.
The Premier B Preliminary Final between Usual Suspects and Dart Vaders was a classic that will be remembered for many seasons to come. Early on, the Usual Suspects were making the experts' predictions of a close one look silly, storming to a 5-0 lead in the race to 10. Then we witnessed the ‘Sam Zach-Attack’. Sam Zacharopoulos (Dart Vaders) won all four of his singles matches and dragged the Vaders back into the contest that went all the way to the teams game of 801 x best of 3 legs. The first leg saw both teams have darts at doubles until Matt Manoel (Usual Suspects) nailed D20. In the second leg, Peter Russo (Dart Vaders) pegged 20 to make it 1-1. In the final deciding leg, both sides missed at least three darts at a double before Aaron Jensen (Usual Suspects) had his big moment. Having lost the last singles match of the night to Zacharopoulos that forced the deciding teams game, Jensen had the final say by hitting 36 on D9 with his last dart in hand. It meant Usual Suspects were through to the Grand Final next week, and the Dart Vaders had finished a very respectable third in their first SADA season. The Usual Suspects’ opponent in the Grand Final will be the Paradise Knights, who they are yet to beat.
Cobras Gold are through to their first SADA Premier A Grand Final after taking full advantage of Toon Squad's bad luck on Monday night. The top-placed Toon Squad had to play the Qualifying Final with just three players as their fourth player to qualify for finals was struck down with illness. The Cobras won three of the first four games of singles (including the one forfeited) and never lost the lead, running out 10-6 winners. The Elimination Final was full of the tension and drama you'd expect in a final played by two teams who could equally claim to have a strong chance of winning the whole thing. The Suvners had edged their way to a 7-4 lead until MVPs suddenly found another gear with some superb darts. Lleyton and Andrew Pugh and Matt Williams (playing his first game since Round 8 ) won two singles matches each in a blistering six-game winning streak that took them from 7-4 down to a 10-7 win. Next week will see Toon Squad front up against the MVPs to see who will play Cobras Gold in the Grand Final.
The finals of SADA’s Premier B went according to script on Monday night as minor premier Paradise Knights booked their spot in the Grand Final in two weeks. Playing the Qualifying Final against 2nd placed Dart Vaders, the Knights won both the doubles before Vaders had the better of the first round of singles and got it back to 4-all. But the Knights steadied and put themselves into a fourth SADA Grand Final in the past four seasons, winning 10-5. The Usual Suspects had won five more games than the Rebels during the season so would have started heavy favourites in the Elimination Final but the Rebels showed last week when they jumped from 7th to 4th on the ladder that anything is possible. On this occasion though, the Usual Suspects were too strong, racing out to a 4-0 lead, and going on to win 10-5. Next week’s Preliminary Final looks like a mouth-watering clash when Dart Vaders take on Usual Suspects to see which team will make the Grand Final in their first SADA season and claim a share in the $500 prizemoney. The two teams most recent encounter in Round 11 ended in a draw so a close one seems likely!
MVPs and Toon Squad played what appeared to be the finals-defining clash of the round. Top-placed Toon Squad won all four first round singles matches and never lost the lead, finishing with a 10-8 win that locked them into top spot. MVPs then sat around assuming they had missed out on the finals but they hadn’t counted on something special from bottom placed Outsiders, who were out to stop Paradise Pigs from taking the last spot in the Top 4. It was neck and neck all night until Outsiders skipper Rhys Gurd won the last game with a final peg of 141 to leave the Pigs stuck in the mud of 5th place and MVPs the lucky losers in 4th. The game had the three highest averages of the night (Outsiders mid-season recruit Ray White with 26.62, Pigs star Gary Kennedy with 25.22 and Gurd with 25.11), as well as the three highest pegs of the night. Kennedy, who has once again topped the league in almost every stat category, also got his 5th Max Pegs of the season. Cobras Gold proved their superiority in the Cobras family with a 14-4 win over Cobras Black thanks to Gold skipper Jacques Wadey's 24+ average and 100% win record. All Nighters made Suvners work hard for their 11-7 win that locked them into 3rd. Darren Rymell and Aries Limpahan posted 23+ averages for Suvners while Andrew Purdie was a stand-out for All Nighters with his 24.82. Finals next week will see Toon Squad and Cobras Gold face-off in the Qualifying Final with the winner booking a direct ticket to the Grand Final. The Elimination Final will be between Suvners – who will be looking to make amends for last season’s straight sets finals exit – and MVPs.
The Hornets had one job - defeat the Rebels to make finals but it didn't go to plan. Rebels captain Sue Pritchard stepped back up to the oche for the first time since Round 8 and led her side to a win that knocked the Hornets out of 4th and propelled the Rebels from 7th to 4th. The Dartaroos bowed out of their first SADA with a 17-1 loss to top side Paradise Knights. Con Mavris got his third Max Pegs in his 9 games this season. Dart Vaders locked in their double chance in the finals by beating Maid of Auckland Dingoes 11-7. Vaders captain Peter Russo topped the league averages for the night with 20.88 while also hitting Max Pegs. A win for the Hustlers over the Usual Suspects would have got them into the finals but the Suspects have been a class above the sides below them all year and were comfortable 13-5 winners. Paul Linke (Hustlers) averaged 20.5 for the night, which was enough to see him top the singles averages this season. Finals match ups next week will see Paradise Knights and Dart Vaders go head-to-head for a spot in the Grand Final and a share of $500 prizemoney. The loser will play the winner of the Elimination Final between Usual Suspects and Rebels.
The Paradise Pigs proved they are not done yet with this season in a full-"boar" performance that knocked Cobras Gold off the top spot they had just claimed a week earlier. The Pigs' 10-8 win has set-up a grandstand regular season finish next week with all Top 4 spots still up for grabs. In what must rank as the best performance by a side this year, MVPs defeated Suvners 12-6 with a combined team average of 23.96! Adam Leek had the night's best average with 26.52 as well as two Ton+ pegs, while the Pughs - Lleyton and Andrew - had 17 pegs between them. Toon Squad sat 6th at the halfway point of the season but with a week to go are now first after an impressive 12-6 win over Outsiders. Mark Carter had a 24.24 average with the night's high peg (124) while Aaron Sims had Max Pegs for the first time this season. All Nighters defeated Cobras Black 12-6 which locks the bottom three in to their final resting places for the season.
Dart Vaders skipper Peter Russo returned from a river holiday for one night only just to make sure his side beat the Hornets and held onto 2nd spot. Russo delivered in the 10-8 win with 3 singles wins and a 19.75 average which helped counter the outstanding night from Hornets stalwart Ian King, who averaged 20.87 in four singles wins and moved into top spot in the league's Singles Average for the season. The other teams in the Top 3, Paradise Knights and Usual Suspects, had no trouble in their wins over the Rebels and Dartaroos respectively. Con Mavris (Knights) had Max Pegs and Matt Manoel (Suspects) pegged a whopping 149, the best of the night in both leagues. MOA Dingoes kept their slim finals hopes alive with an 11-7 win over the Hustlers despite Paul Linke's Max Pegs for the fifth time. The marquee game in the final round is between Rebels and Hornets. If the Hornets win they are guaranteed to play finals, while if the Rebels win they will jump into the finals as long as Dart Vaders and Usual Suspects don't slip up in their games. Keep an eye on the Top Singles Average - three players are separated by just .01 with one week to go.
With two rounds to go, five teams are competing for the four spots in the finals and are now separated by one point each. All Nighters did the MVPs a favour by defeating Paradise Pigs 11-7. Since sitting on top of the league after Round 7, the Pigs have picked up just one win and one draw in their last five games. Cobras Gold went to the top of the ladder for the first time this season with their third consecutive 10-8 win, this time over Outsiders. Rhys Gurd (Outsiders) had the best Singles Average (25.26) of the round, and managed Max Pegs (8). Form side Toon Squad had a win to savour over previously top placed Suvners, 10-8, but are still yet to guarantee their finals spot. Cobras Black managed to pinch a 9-9 draw from the higher ranked MVPs despite MVPs having 3 of the top 8 singles averages of the week.
Many might be asking if it's a case of 'No Mel, No Hornets' after the fourth-placed side went down to the MOA Dingoes 11-7. Stewart Anderson had his best night for the Dingoes by leading his side's averages and winning all his singles. Hustlers kept their finals hopes well and truly alive with a 12-6 win over Dartaroos. They were led by 'Max Pegs King' Paul Linke who hit every peg for the fourth time this year. He also had the night's highest singles average with 20.4. Usual Suspects defeated Rebels 11-7 with four Suspects making the coveted Summary Sheet! Vanessa Bridge (Rebels) had the highest peg of the night for the second week in a row, this time it was a whopping 130. The game of the night was at the top of the table where Paradise Knights and Dart Vaders drew 9-9. Peter Russo starred for Dart Vaders with a 19.9 average and Max Pegs.
Two seemingly significant results this week. Toon Squad's six-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Cobras Gold, who were the last team to beat them way back in Round 4. The Jacques-led Cobras now sit in 2nd, a game clear of Toon Squad in 3rd. The other big result was MVPs knocking off Paradise Pigs in comprehensive fashion to take their spot in the Top 4. Adam Leek and Lleyton Pugh both won 4/4 singles, with Lethal Leek getting Max Pegs (10). Outsiders gave themselves every chance to avoid the wooden spoon with their second win of the year, defeating All Nighters. Top side Suvners got the job done with a comprehensive win over Cobras Black. Amazingly, more than half of all Prem A players had a 180 on the night (19 out of 34).
Two teams who look destined to meet in a final at some stage next month - The Usual Suspects and Dart Vaders - played out a 9-9 draw. Matt Manoel contributed Max Pegs for Usual Suspects with a 180 and a 107 peg. The Paradise Knights are now three points clear on top, which coincides with Con Mavris playing the last three games for them. This week, Mavris had a 21+ average, two 180s and a 13-dart leg, which is the shortest of the season. The Hornets sent Life Member Mel Rodda into SADA retirement on a good note with a win over the Hustlers. Rebels kept the pressure on Hornets with a win over Dartaroos to stay just one point away from the Top 4. Vanessa Bridge (Rebels) turned on her best performance of the season with a 20.2 average, Max Pegs (10) and a 113 peg.
With four rounds to go, just one point separates all teams in the Top 4 with MVPs sitting just one game outside the four. In the big 1st v 2nd clash, Suvners had the lead but the Paradise Pigs rallied, winning 3 out of 4 in the final round to snatch a point. The 9-9 draw kept Suvners on top of the ladder. Gary Kennedy (25.85 avg) was superb for the Pigs, taking over as Singles Average leader for the first time this season. Toon Squad are looking like they've got a bit of the Brisbane Lions about them, having started the season without a win in their first four games but now sit 2nd after a 16-2 thumping of Cobras Black. MVPs made the most of their away trip to Maid of Auckland, beating the Outsiders 12-6 with Lleyton Pugh managing Max Pegs (10). Cobras Gold continued to hold their spot in the Top 4 with a well engineered win over All Nighters.
Not a lot of close games this week but it was probably the highest quality of darts thrown in Prem B all year. Nine players averaged 19+ and many threw well above their season average. Hustlers staked their claim to be the best side outside the Top 4 by beating Rebels which put them just a point away from 4th. Paradise Knights were too good for Hornets, thanks to a stand-out performance from Con Mavris (19.6 avg, Max Pegs and 2x180s) who has now qualified for finals. Dart Vaders dominated Dartaroos, with Peter Russo topping the weekly averages with a 20.24 and 9 pegs. Usual Suspects had new shirts and posted some superb numbers (3 players with 19+ averages) on way to beating MOA Dingoes.
MVPs had two key players interstate this week and therefore had to forfeit to Cobras Gold which really shook up the ladder. It put MVPs a win + 5 legs outside the Top 4 after being 3rd last week. Toon Squad's unstoppable form continued with their fifth win in a row, this time over All Nighters 14-4. Top-side Suvners had to work hard to get over bottom-placed Outsiders 11-7. Aries Limpahan was Suvners best with a 23.5 singles average. Paradise Pigs had little trouble beating Cobras Black 14-4 with a stand-out performance from Gary Kennedy who hit Max Pegs for the 4th time this season and a 25.67 average which has him 0.01 away from top spot in the season averages.
The all-female Rebels were the headline act in Round 9 with their sensational 10-8 win over 2nd placed Dart Vaders. They all contributed to put themselves just one point away from a spot in the Top 4. Paradise Knights flexed their muscle at the top of the table in a 16-2 win over Hustlers. Four Knights featured in the Top 10 singles averages, most notably Con Mavris, whose average of 22.14 was the 3rd best in Prem B all season. Maid of Auckland Dingoes found some of their best form to claim their 3rd win of the season, defeating Dartaroos 14-4. Captain Alan Wilden led the way for the Dingoes with a 19.35 average, Max Pegs and 2x180s. Usual Suspects had a similarly dominant 14-4 win over Hornets, thanks in part to Aaron Jensen's 20+ average. It put Usual Suspects one win away from 2nd spot.
Some BIG results this week has seen Suvners go to the top of the ladder for the first time this season. Their 13-5 win over Cobras Gold was led by Darren Rymell who hit Max Pegs and the night's top singles average of 25.41. MVPs went even bigger with a 17-1 win over All Nighters, who were just saved from the whitewash in the last game of the night. Toon Squad proved they are now the form side of the competition with their fourth win in a row, this time over the former top side, Paradise Pigs. It has put the Toon Squad into the Top 4 for the first time this season. In a critical match at the bottom, Cobras Black held on for a 10-8 win over Outsiders. Outsiders were coming off their first win last week and had the chance to move off the bottom but the loss will mean they need at least two more wins to avoid the spoon.
Paradise Knights have continued their recent dominance of Premier B with a 13-5 win over 3rd placed Usual Suspects. The Knights had all four players average above 18.6, with Ryan Huesler hitting 2x180s and taking himself to the top of the singles averages for the season in his 2nd game. Usual Suspects Matt Manoel (2nd) and Aaron Jensen (4th) will no doubt be keen to knock him off. The Hornets had a big win over Dartaroos but it wasn't all easy going. Spare a thought for SADA Life Member Mel Rodda who - at age 85 - threw 416 darts for the night on his way to Max Pegs... what a marathon effort! Maid of Auckland Dingoes got their second win of the season by beating the Rebels, 12-6. Second placed Dart Vaders had to work hard for their 10-8 win over the Hustlers which kept them level on points with the Knights.
We knew the season would be close but Round 7 reached new heights of competitiveness in SADA's Prem A. Winless and bottom-placed Outsiders beat the top-placed and previously undefeated Paradise Pigs. How? Well, Ray White joined them and topped the weekly singles averages with 25+ then Rhys Gurd won a dramatic last leg to claim the 10-8 win. In another surprise, Toon Squad defeated MVPs by the same score. They were also strengthened with a first-game player in Sean Chambers (24+ ave) but it was SADA President Mark Carter who stole the show with a season-best 11-dart leg! Suvners had their 2nd important win in a row, beating All Nighters (with two new players), while in the first 'Cobras Derby' it was the Gold side on top, with captain Jacques Wadey hitting a 140 and a show-stopping 132 (Bull-Bull-D16)! More than 70% of Prem A players had a singles average of 20 or more this week.
SADA's Premier B has reached the halfway point of the season with three teams startng to break away from the pack. Paradise Knights, Dart Vaders and Usual Suspects continued their winning ways this week (over Dartaroos, Hustlers and Dingoes respectively) and appear destined to fight it out come finals time in November. The other spot in the finals remains up for grabs and neither Hornets or Rebels could determine which of them had the stronger claims on fourth spot, as they played out a 9-9 draw. There were two outstanding individual moments this week. Ryan Huesler (Knights) had the shortest leg of the season - 14 darts, and Ethan Bray (Dart Vaders) had the highest peg of the season - 160. That will take some beating!
The only team with their own mascot, Paradise Pigs, are now one win clear on top of the Premier A ladder after defeating Cobras Gold 11-7. MVPs had new shirts but their form dipped slightly in an 11-7 loss to Suvners who went back into the Top 4. Maid of Auckland was host to the two best singles averages of the night - Rhys Gurd (Outsiders) with 24.75 and Gary Shepley (Toon Squad) with 24.61. While back at Croydon, there was a stir in the crowd when SA darts stalwart Ray White arrived with his darts in his pocket. He stepped in for Cobras Black, who were short, and claimed Max Pegs (10) along with his 400th (and 401st) 180 in SADA competition but his side still went down to second-placed All Nighters.
Paradise Knights are back on top for the first time since Round 2 thanks to their win over the Rebels. Dart Vaders also won (defeating Hornets 10-8) but dropped to second on legs won. Usual Suspects have probably been flying under the radar this season but they now have two of Top 3 best season averages (excluding one game players) and with a big win over Dartaroos plenty will be noticing them now. After a slow start, new side Hustlers have made it three wins in a row, defeating the Dingoes in a close one, 10-8. It jumped them up in to the Top 4 for the first time this season.
After taking their spot at the top last week, Paradise Pigs said "no you don't" to All Nighters this week and reclaimed the highest rung on the ladder by beating them 10-8. The other games were similarly close. Toon Squad got their first win of the season by beating Suvners 10-8, and Cobras Gold had to fight hard for their 10-8 win over Outsiders. MVPs won 11-7 over Cobras Black, thanks to having the two best singles averages of the night by Lleyton Pugh and Adam Leek, along with three Ton+ pegs from Jesse Marshall. Other notables this week were the 160 peg by Mark Edwards (Paradise Pigs), and two monster pegs by Luke Hall (All Nighters) - 151 and 140.
Paradise Knights have cashed in their 'good sports' credits from a few weeks ago by bringing in Sean Chambers for the 1st v 2nd clash against Dart Vaders. Chambers delivered by averaging 24+ while hitting Max Pegs to lead the Knights to a 12-6 win and inflict the first loss on Dart Vaders. The other top four clash saw Usual Suspects defeat Rebels, while at Maid of Auckland, Hornets beat the Dingoes in a close one. Dingoes captain and SADA Life Member Alan Wilden hit a 15-dart leg with a 152 finish (immediately after a 99 peg) - he's still got it!
The top-of-the-table clash between Paradise Pigs and MVPs ended in a draw and meant neither are top after Round 4. That spot belongs to All Nighters after their big win over Outsiders. The biggest winner was Suvners, who had Darren Rymell throw a 27+ average with two 13-dart legs and Max Pegs. Cobras Gold played some of their best darts of the season en route to beating Toon Squad.
Dart Vaders made an emphatic statement in the top-of-the-table clash against Usual Suspects, winning 12-6. Geoff Matthews led the Vaders with a superb 21.5 singles average, with two 180s and a 142 finish, while winning his 5 matches. It was a similarly memorable night for the teams at the bottom who both got their first points. Dartaroos managed a draw with Rebels, while the Hustlers took their first win by defeating Hornets in a close one, 10-8.
Paradise Pigs kept top spot of the Prem A ladder and became the only team without a loss after a hard-fought 10-8 win over Suvners. All Nighters arguably made the biggest statement of the round by knocking off the previously unbeaten Cobras Gold. Cobras Black held on to beat Toon Squad who were missing two of their top regulars, while MVPs were too good for Outsiders. MVPs' Lleyton Pugh had his third Top 2 finish in the singles averages while also claiming Max Pegs. Gary Kennedy knocked him off with a sensational 26.8. Lucas Brow from Cobras Black had 2x180s and the highest peg (119).
Dart Vaders made themselves the last undefeated team in Premier B with a big win over Dartaroos. Usual Suspects showed the class they have in their win over Maid of Auckland Dingoes with Aaron Jenson putting on a show by averaging 24.58. Paradise Knights made themselves eligible for a good blokes award by lending their captain Terry Smith to their opposition and then going on to lose to the Hornets. Rebels kept Hustlers winless, with both Emma Brown (Rebels) and Paul Linke (Hustlers) achieving Max Pegs.
After only two rounds already there is no team with a perfect record this season. Paradise Pigs' big win has seen them move to the top of the table, while Cobras Gold, All Nighters and Suvners also had their first wins of the season. MVPs' Lleyton Pugh topped the singles averages for the second week in a row, while Andrew Conroy again proved himself as SADA's High Peg King, with three 100+ checkouts for the night.
Dart Vaders and Paradise Knights have made themselves the early Premier B leaders by being SADA's only sides with two wins out of two. Three players went home with Max Pegs, including Geoff Matthews, who managed a clean sweep by getting 10 pegs, a Top 10 singles average, 2 x 180s, a Ton+ Peg and the round's equal shortest leg with 18. The Dart Vaders v Rebels match was affected by issues with ordering.
Adam Leek's new team, MVPs, arrived with a win which was led by 20-year-old Lleyton Pugh who recorded the league's highest average of the week (26+) in his debut SADA game. Newly promoted Cobras Black started their Prem A venture with a tight win over Rhys Gurd's new side, Outsiders. In the other games, two draws showed it will be another super-close season in SADA Premier A.
Paradise Knights have been almost completely revamped in the off-season and chose to go down to Premier B but their early form suggests they will be one of the teams to beat. With a Premier A fill-in player in Brett Selga (who topped the averages), the Knights were too good for new side Usual Suspects. The Dart Vaders are straight from WADA and were very consistent in beating Hustlers. Rebels had the close one, just beating Maid of Auckland Dingoes.
